Alonside Proficiency
May 05, 2026
Here’s one way to measure a young person's growth in their language education and training.
Evaluate their proficiency level in reading, listening, speaking and writing.
A1. A2. B1. B2. C1. C2
Here’s another way. One that doesn’t replace proficiency, but sits alongside it.
Evaluate their character traits.
Curiosity: How often do they initiate conversations about new things or seek out new experiences?
Courage: How likely are they to attempt things that they might fail at?
Connection: How easily do they develop relationships with people from other languages, countries or cultures?
Clarity: How well do they organise thoughts on a topic and express them to other people?
Confidence: How often do they take the first step and make decisions from their own judgment rather than what others think or expect?
If the outcome is a young person empowered with the skills and mindset to thrive not just in languages but in life, it might be worth considering both.
